Regulation of Vital Signs to Maintain
Health and Fitness
1. What are the Vital Signs?
Vital signs aim to measure the basic activities and functions of the body. Primarily, health care providers and the medical profession and focus on monitoring of major vital signs on a routine basis.
These include the following:
Respiration rate (rate of breathing)
Body temperature
Blood pressure
Pulse rate (heart rate)
These vital signs can either be measured at home or in a medical set up like the hospital emergency department. The purpose is to monitor and detect possible medical problems adding early stage. A set of electronic equipment is used to observe these readings and assess measurements.
2. Vital Signs and Their Regulation
2.1 Respiration Rate
Respiration rate accounts for the number of breaths that are taken within 60 seconds . Measured in a resting state normal range of respiration rate lies between 12 to 20 breaths each minute . This can be easily calculated keeping a count on your chest rising as you inhale and exhale.
Often the body requires the breathing rate to be adjusted. Low oxygen levels are detected bybrain receptors which send the body signals to then regulate it. Body respiration rate can vary with activities for instance exercise or intake of substances, injuries, or different diseases. Factors like respiratory diseases, dehydration, anxiety, fever, and hard problems can lead to a high respiration rate. Common causes for low respiratory rate can occur by drug overdose or a head injury or obstructive sleep apnea.
In order to keep your respiration rate normal, you can adapt activities like
● Quit smoking
● Exercise frequently
● Eat antioxidant-rich foods
● Pursed lips breathing
● Diaphragmatic breathing
2.2 Body temperature
Body temperature can vary according to food consumption, recent activities, gender, menstruating women, and time of the day. Normal body temperature occurs between 97.8 to 99 degrees. Your body temperature is bound to increase during fever or after strenuous physical activity.
You can reduce this by:
● Applying ice cold water to neck, wrists, and chest
● Heat regulation supplements
● Cold shower
● Cool liquids
● Limiting moments
Hypothermia can be the leading cause of low body temperature. To regulate your body temperature you can resort to physical exercises like push-ups, jumping jacks or burn calories and take special care of your nutrition by vegetables and fruits . You need to keep a special check on your thyroid gland activity and red blood cells.
2.3.Blood Pressure
Blood pressure monitors your heart activity. As your heart relaxes your pressure starts to fall, while it pumps blood and contracts to increase your blood pressure. Normal blood pressure range lies between less than systolic 120 and less than diastolic 80 . Any measurements above one 120/80 are considered to be elevated.
Low blood pressure is an indicator of:
● Kidney failure
● Shock
● Heart attack
● Stroke
It can be maintained by:
● Salt intake
● Drinking water
● Sitting cross-legged
● Intake of frequent meals
While high blood pressure can lead to heart diseases but can be regulated by:
● Losing weight
● Exercising regularly
● Consuming a healthy diet
● Low salt intake
● Quitting alcohol, smoking, and caffeine
2.4 Pulse Rate
It measures the number of heartbeats each minute while indicating pulse strength and the rhythm of the heart. It can range from 60 - 100 beats each minute, However, the cost will be higher in females above age 12 than males.
Pulse rate can vary with illness, strenuous exercise, emotions, and energy. You can use the radial or the carotid artery to monitor it. Aging can cause an increased heart rate while exercise can regulate it. To remain physically fit and maintain your heart rate it is important to lose weight, reduce stress, and quit tobacco products.
